Going into 2017 I knew it was going to be a year focused on healing.
I didn’t know it was going to be a year of embracing my mystical nature.
I’d been intrigued by the idea of mysticism for the last few years. Had even picked up a book called The Essential Mystics, Poets, Saints and Sages: A Wisdom Treasury on a road trip in Ashland Oregon the Summer of 2015. But for some reason I was waiting to dive in. Last year I finally took the plunge.

Today's episode probably isn't as big of a deal as it feels like to me. Or maybe it is. I don't know. What I do know and have known for a while is that change was called for, so I surrendered. I'd been feeling the momentum of inevitability behind me for the last five or so months, like a force of miraculous grace. I took my time, listened, and applied deeper trust than I've had to on any decision in my career to date.
It's been the kind of transition where you question your sanity, because you're about to throw a wrench in something that works really well. I don't really know what to expect, but I know what I sense in my bones is coming and I've got to believe I'm ready for it, or it wouldn't be happening now.
I officially decided to change the name of the show in the beginning of December. Because I'd recorded several episodes with the old name, I had to wait until today, 1/22 to make the announcement. And of course, because divine timing is always happening, it worked out that I got the extra little boost of faith I needed when Oprah blessed us with this sentence at the 2018 Golden Globes, "What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have."

When I sat down to record this it was the Sunday night the week before it goes live. I realized as I began that it was the final episode under the original name of the podcast - Untame the Wild Soul. Our topic today has to do with that last sentence of the intro to these Sunday sermons, about remembering that you are made from love, you are love, and you are loved. I get a lot of notes from people telling me how much they love hearing that every week, that they need the reminder, that the truth of this feels so nourishing, that even when the head wants to object, the heart knows it’s the truth.
So I was thinking about this the other morning at the time of this recording and I had a little epiphany about choosing love over fear. This is something you may have heard before, in some context or another, to choose love over fear. It’s a fairly common cornerstone of lots of ancient teachings, wisdom traditions, and faiths. And while it sounds so beautiful, and like it should totally work, just choose love over fear…right….got it.
It’s much easier to say than do. Listen in for my thoughts on how to actually do this in a way that works for us and honors who we each are, and how we're each designed.

Over Christmas time I was home with my family on the east coast and we got really excited to go see the new Mary Poppins movie coming out on Christmas Day. I’m recording this Sermon with two hopes:

I’m calling this Sermon “Real, Kind Progress” because I want to take two mindsets that are pervasive and detrimental in our culture and offer you an alternative. Those two mindsets are the all or nothing mentality and perfectionism.
In her book Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life, Anne Lamott speaks about perfectionism:
“Perfectionism is the voice of the oppressor, the enemy of the people. It will keep you cramped and insane your whole life, and it is the main obstacle between you and a shitty first draft. I think perfectionism is based on the obsessive belief that if you run carefully enough, hitting each stepping-stone just right, you won't have to die. The truth is that you will die anyway and that a lot of people who aren't even looking at their feet are going to do a whole lot better than you, and have a lot more fun while they're doing it.”

Today's interview is a long time coming, our guest is Tara Mohr and she is all about Playing Big, which of course, we love! During our chat we got into being of service, the ego vs the soul, how we play small and how we can play big instead, and we spent some extra time on playing big in motherhood specifically. We talked about the difference between fear an intuition, a question I get a lot, and we wrapped up with creative expression and how to be discerning with our words so we don't "kill things."

Since 2010 the month of December has been a month of big decisions and massive change and transition for me. I don’t know if it has to do with where Gemini and Sagittarius fall in my astrological chart, the momentum of an impending New Year or what. Now that I practice more surrender and trust in life, am way more accepting of what is, have very little need to control or manipulate anything, and have cultivated deeper patience than I ever thought I was capable, instead of ripping through my life like a hurricane, these decisions, changes and transitions are like a sacred unfolding, orchestrated by the divine, working with and through me.
This year December has been all about two things.
Emotional Freedom and coming out of hiding. It's these two things that had me ruminating on the relationship between harm and healing - so that's what today's Sunday Sermon is all about.

This Sunday's Sermon is a case for starting before you're ready. In the episode I speak most specifically about creative projects, using my first book as an example. Truly, this can apply to anything though. Something I say a lot is that we're never ready - which also means that we're always ready. Readiness is something I believe people put a little too much weight on. If there is a spark, a desire, something you know you must do, be, create, taste, experience, or even just try (sorry Yoda, I believe in trying, deal with it!)...I say go for it. We just never know what's on the other side of giving things a shot.

Since our first interview back in February 2016, today's guest has become one of my closest friends. What I love about Rachael Maddox is that her intelligence, rigor, and commitment to trauma resolution work runs as deep and wide as her passion, power, and capacity to hold space for it. A study back in 2011 revealed that we are bombarded with the equivalent of 174 newspapers a day. That’s 5x as much information since 1986. And that was 6 years ago.
Our responsibilities and stressors are off the charts. A lot of what doesn’t work in our cultural, social, environmental and political systems is breaking down before our very eyes, without viable new solutions in sight, let alone in place yet. AND all of that feels extra scary because of the amount of images, articles and videos we see about it online every single day.
The bottom line is in spite of all our advances in the 21st century, it’s easier than ever to be overstressed, over worked, over tired, overwhelmed, and overconsumed. The good news is, even with life’s challenges and complexities - it’s possible to unconsume yourself, and to tend to your mental, emotional, physical, spiritual and energetic health in a way that makes 21st century living way more manageable - even fun. That's what today's Sunday Sermon is all about.

In today's sermon, I'm sharing an experience I had recently that has two parts and a story from a book I’m reading. The two parts of my personal story have to do with facing my own shadow, and finding deeper forgiveness for a situation I thought I had forgiven thoroughly because I had be working on forgiving the situation for more than an entire year already, yet I discovered, there was still more to forgive. The story from the book is about unconditional forgiveness. This episode is about depth, possibility, and liberation through one of the most timeless and loving practices there is. Enjoy.
