This is Part II of 33 Lessons From My 33rd Year. Part of my intention with doing this two-part series was really personal and also alchemical. I had been thinking about writing a blog post, 33 Lessons From My 33rd year, but it felt daunting. Then when I realized I deleted the episode that was supposed to go live on Sept 4, it felt like an opening. We even ended up moving the episode we had planned for today.
This is how life works when you listen to your Wild Soul. It’s a dance of peaceful action and surrender to life’s mysterious way of unfolding and letting us know what wants to happen. In my experience I find this is what free will is for. To say yes and roll with it when it’s obvious, or say no and do whatever you want.
This episode goes live on Monday 9/11 and my birthday is this coming Thursday 9/14. Many will listen to this long after those dates, so I’m invoking some divine support, and the wisdom of my higher soul to declare that energetically, by telling these stories and sharing these lessons and reflections now, I am putting all the energy and attachments of these things that do not serve my highest and best behind me under grace in perfect ways.
These episodes are an honoring and completion of what was, what has fertilized, and what is new, next, and unfolding. To be able to share these stories, from a more healed and neutral place, with mega compassion for everyone involved, while also not holding back my truth, feels important. It’s something I need to practice more, while also balancing what feels right to keep private or sacred.
Life involves other people and navigating that can be sticky sometimes, but it’s not an excuse to hide.

When I pressed record on this episode I wasn't sure how long it would take. I also had no idea how cathartic it would be, or how much I needed to do this to powerfully and intentionally close out my wildest year yet. It's split into two parts - this is part one, Lessons 1-18. Part II will go up next week. May it be useful.
The last year has been one of the most significant, intense, healing, revealing, challenging, and miraculous of my life. Much of that was painted by ending a long term relationship with an emotionally abusive and highly narcissistic person, facing my own codependency, and working through everything that came with that. A lot of it also arose out of recalibrating my identity and reclaiming my power and truth. Many of these lessons also revolved around gaining a deeper understanding of compassion and applying it to every area of my life.
Compassion doesn't mean tolerating bad behavior or not telling the whole truth about things when the timing is right and it's healthy. Compassion doesn't mean protecting people who don't protect you. Compassion is about acceptance in it's highest form. It's about deeply questioning things AND accepting things. Compassion invites us to listen to our souls and take action that aligns with our values. At least that's how compassion has wanted to weave itself into the fabric of my life over the last year.
In the last year I also identified some shifts that were needing to happen in my business and marketing practices. And in a clearer way than ever, I saw where I hadn't been acknowledging and integrating deeper collective issues into my life, message and work. I have learned a lot and continue to learn how to can engage with these issues in a more useful way for the WHOLE, rather than just myself, or the people in, "my bubble." Life is so freaking full and everything touches everything else.
This sermon is inspired by three powerhouse women I got to interview for the show this week: Kelly Diels, Sonya Renee Taylor, and L'Erin Alta. They are all doing their own form of activism in the world and they are all rocking it out with fierceness AND compassion, which is why their work is effective. A big lesson I learned in this last year, is the difference between compassion and tolerance. I’ll riff on that more during my 33 lessons in my 33rd year episode, but the crux is this, we can be compassionate, while demonstrating intolerance for things that do not align with our values.

Light Watkins is a former fashion model turned meditation teacher. He was raised in the South, has lived in New York City and Los Angeles, and has traveled extensively. He brings a ton of perspective from a wealth of experience, in a super calm, direct, and grounded way. Relax and enjoy this interview, wild ones. We talked about different forms of meditation and which ones work best for which people. Light walked me through some really interesting scientific facts about meditation (don't worry - we didn't get too technical!), and what the four catalysts for distress are. We got into boredom, connection, and happiness. AND!! He shared a really awesome story of a trip he took to Paris many years ago that was filled with synchronicity (our favorite!).

This week's Sunday Sermon opens up with a prayer and ends with a poem. Between the two I explore the concept and symbolism of spirals and how they show up and impact our lives and our thoughts. When we increase our awareness of the spiral nature of life, it's much easier to have faith, build trust, and surrender in the day to day. We better understand that life, progress, and existence simply aren't linear. From there I explored the relationship between faith, trust, and surrender by revisiting, deconstructing and refining views I've previously held. Enjoy - and here's the poem:

Today's guest recently published her first book, Grief Unveiled, and I've been looking forward to having her on the show since the idea for this book was just a seedling. I remember being on the phone with her and saying she must message me as soon as it was ready to be alive in the world so we could talk about it on the show. Grief is a deeply personal, intimate, and tender topic, and Sarah comes from a place of wanting to rebel against grief "as we know it." Sarah is a veteran and military widow with four children, who found herself seeking a solution that didn't exist. Her perspective on grief is that it doesn't have to only be about survival or stress management, and that it's entirely possible to create a thriving life (and not dishonoring or disrespectful to anyone's memory). This is what she's done, and in today's episode she's sharing her story, her experience, and how she now helps other widows through the experience as well. If you've never heard of Anita Moorjani before, she is an extraordinary woman with an incredible story and treasure trove of wisdom to share. In 2006, she died of cancer. You read that right. She came back and now shares the story openly of what happened "on the other side" through speaking engagements and books. Back in 2014 I listened to her first book, "Dying To Be Me" and it had a deep impact on me. So much so that when I started reading her second book, "What if this is Heaven?" a few months ago, and had the thought, "I would LOVE to interview her!" I actually felt a bit intimidated.
It was a real honor to spend an hour with Anita and get to reflect more intimately on her experience of living since dying. We talked about the difference between human love and unconditional love. She shared how over-giving, over-functioning, guilt and fear contributed to her excruciating four-year cancer experience. We talked about what it was like returning to her body, how she works with her inner guidance now, and why this earth experience is necessary. And I especially appreciated her exploration of "health awareness," as often (not always), what is being called "healthcare" is more like "illness scare."

I've been anticipating this interview for a while and it did not disappoint! She had a lot to say about the evolution of life coaching, we discussed some of our pet peeves in the current industry, and I got her opinion on when people are ready to either become a life coach, or hire a life coach. As a former therapist, it was also illuminating to hear Julie's perspective on when it's appropriate to hire a coach or hire a therapist. I get SO MANY requests from people to pick my brain about business that I decided to start answering them on the podcast sporadically. In this episode I talked about dealing with the fear and anxiety of putting yourself out there, how to take action and not get paralyzed so you can start building momentum, and what to do about earning income until your business takes off. I see a lot of people shooting themselves in the foot financially as they try to make businesses work and that's one of the primary reasons businesses don't work. Money stress is a pervasive energy. #1. As I write this I feel anxiety running through my body as I have been playing with the idea of putting myself out there. My question is, did you feel fear as you started putting yourself out there and creating different opportunities? If so, how did you work through those fears? I feel like I have so much to share and create but I am paralyzed by doing so. It feels way too vulnerable for me sometimes.
#1a. Excellent question! And clearly so many of us can relate. I launched my first program last month (beta test). The day I started printing I was exhilarated. Scared. But excited. The next day the vulnerability hangover was so intense I fought with people I love, I abandoned all self care, and I doubted myself huge. I caught myself and turned it around quickly, thankfully. But damn it was so intense!
#2. The start up phase: how do you make sure the need to earn an income doesn't kill your creative freedom? I'm trying to move out of debts and into business for ages already, but all those bridge jobs tend to earn me just enough to live and take up all my time.. what's the way out and up?
#2a. This is my dilemma too, it's like I'm stuck in a loop of bridge jobs that take up all of my time, deplete me and leave me with no energy to do my business ?
